Assam-registered vehicles were reportedly stopped and turned back at Umiam (Barapani) and Byrnihat on Sunday, even as Assam-based drivers’ unions suspended their three-day blockade.

Drivers alleged that Meghalaya taxi unions were continuing to bar Assam tourist vehicles from entering the state while Meghalaya cabs continued to ferry passengers up to Jorabat. The restrictions disrupted the Guwahati-Shillong corridor, with some tourists reportedly forced to walk between Byrnihat and Jorabat.

The All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association has maintained its strike and urged Meghalaya drivers to protest at Byrnihat, citing unresolved concerns over the safety and losses of local drivers.

The Assam blockade was suspended on Saturday after Minister Atul Bora assured protesting drivers that their concerns over security and compensation would be addressed. The ongoing standoff continues to affect passenger movement between Assam and Meghalaya.
