The Riya Talukdar murder case has taken a tragic turn following the death of her husband and prime accused, Ramanujan Goswami, while he was being taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Sunday night.
Riya Talukdar was allegedly murdered at their residence in Basisthapur Bylane 4, where police had reportedly recovered her severed head from a refrigerator along with a sharp weapon suspected to have been used in the crime. Ramanujan was subsequently arrested by Dispur Police and was in police custody.
According to the police, Ramanujan became unwell on Sunday night while in custody. During the journey to the hospital, he allegedly attempted to jump from the police vehicle and sustained serious injuries. He was taken to GMCH, where doctors declared him dead.
Ramanujan and Riya had reportedly been married for around six months.
Meanwhile, a sombre atmosphere prevailed at Ramanujan’s residence in Gauripur, Dhubri, where Riya’s Adya Shraddha ceremony was underway. The family reportedly received news of Ramanujan’s death during the ceremony, following which the rituals were left incomplete.
The incident has left both families grieving and has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the accused’s death. Police and GMCH authorities have provided their respective accounts, while further details are expected as the authorities examine the matter.
The case remains under investigation.
