Krishna Janmashtami, marking the birth of Lord Krishna, is being celebrated across Assam and the country today with religious fervour and devotion.

According to Hindu belief, Lord Krishna was born on the eighth day of the Bhadra month in the prison of King Kansa in Mathura. The festival commemorates his divine birth and his role in the triumph of good over evil.

From Mathura and Vrindavan to Assam, devotees are observing Janmashtami with prayers, devotional programmes and cultural events. In several parts of the state, preparations are underway for celebrations spanning two to three days.

Satras, naamghars and Krishna temples across Assam have lined up special programmes to mark the occasion.

At the Hare Krishna Temple in North Guwahati, a three-day Janmashtami celebration is underway. The temple premises have turned vibrant with devotional chants and Krishna bhajans.

Temple authorities are making elaborate arrangements to welcome lakhs of devotees during the three-day celebration.
